1967: Monkey, Experiences or a Summer of Love? Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band!
The Monkeys went famous for their TV show and Jimi Hendrix went famous for his reinvention
of the electric guitarplaying, in February he released a cover of "Hey Joe" and
in May his epoch-making album " Are You Experienced?" was released! Melody Maker(1967)
about Jimi Hendrix music: "...it´s flying music. Love and Freedom. Body, Soul, Funk,
Feeling, Feedback and Freak....the Emotion, the Power, and the Beauty..." and about
the album, " Are You Experienced?": "..change speed mid-number, stop, start, fade,
fizzle, simmer and burn in a cauldron of beatiful fire".
Summer of Love: 'tune in, turn on, drop out' and psychedelic music was in the mood
in San Francisco with happenings, 'be-ins' and 'love-ins', taking place all over
the "city", with bands like Quicksilver Messenger Service, Grateful Dead, Love and
Jefferson Airplan. The concerts ads was psychedelic LSD inspired art posters and
the people at the happenings were described as 'hippies'. In June the first large
scale outdoor rock music festival was held in California, the Monterey Pop Festival,
with bands like the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Who, the Byrds; Jeffereson Airplane
and others.
The Beatles hooked on the psychedelic trend and released "Penny Lane/Strawberry
Fields", they perform "All You Need Is Love" in the first worldwide television broadcast
and released their legendary masterpiece: "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band".
Paul McCartney admitted that he had taken LSD and in July Mick Jagger was accused
for possessing drugs(Benzedrine) also in July: Pink Floyd has a big hit with the
psychedelic single, "See Emily Play". Scott McKenzie hits the charts with the Summer
of Love song:, "(If You're Going To) San Francisco"
In December a new Hendrix album is released, "Axis: Bold As Love", in an interview
with Melody Maker Jimi Hendrix is describing the intention with the album: "...we've
tried to get the freaky tracks right into another dimesion so you get that sky effedt
like they´re coming down ot the heavens..", he was also Melody Makers's choice:
'Pop Soundof the Year' despite the massive commercial succes of the Beatles.

They played "Let's Spend the Night Together" on The Ed Sullivan Show and, on Ed's
request changed lyrics from "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spend some
time together".
